You're Not Alone: How Kefir Saved My Marriage
I wish my personal discovery of kefir grains started though an exotic travel romp through the Caucasus mountains or some hippie foodiejourney discovering fermented foods cultures around the world. That would be so elegant. Heck, I could skip the "why" part altogether. Instead I could just start with explaining all the myriad benefits kefir has had on my body, skin, and overall well-being. But that would feel like a disservice to those with whom I really want to share this amazing food. So here it goes… My personal discovery of kefir started with a painful burning of my lady-bits that would not go away.
I eradicated a 3 year-long yeast infection with kefir. Yes, that is not an error: I suffered from a yeast infection for THREE years. It is definitely not hyperbole when I say Kefir Saved My Marriage.
Publicly, I'm one of those people who seems to have all of my things together, including ducks in rows and mental faculties intact. Please, dear friends, know that I am simply a master of privately breaking down into puddles of hopelessness. For three years, I was in a constant state of pain, unable to sleep most nights, and unable to enjoy the simpler pleasure of a happy marriage. Most women have their brave face down to an art. Saying "I'm fine," concealer, meditation, and a compassionate husband definitely helped me save face.
As a master of poise under pressure, I really do not want to share my itchy vulva adventure with the world. However, this isn't about me. This is about the millions of women, like me, who are STILL suffering. One morning I found myself on an online community forum at 3 AM with an ice pack between my legs and tears running down my face. I stumbled on a commentator's mention of some yogurty-thing called Kefir and thought, "Oh, something I haven't tried yet; guess I'll get some." The commenter simply said something like "Just reminded me to get milk before I run out of kefir, it's the only thing that's worked." I dutifully found a kefir grain provider and drank the sour milk substance every day. In a month, my life would turn from one of silent suffering to hardcore kefir evangelist.
My yeast infection symptoms disappeared after TWO days of daily kefir consumption. I realized it wasn't a fluke when the infection did not return the next month during my ovulation cycle. As on this article's publication, I have been infection free for two years. I am also enjoying some interesting side-effects from my kefir such as clear radiant skin, digestive regularity and consistently pleasant body odor.
I went through a grieving process as I said goodbye to my life before kefir. I experienced some serious denial for a while, expecting the symptoms to come back. Then I was furious, refusing to accept that such a simple solution was never suggested by my physicians. I bargained with my kefir, skipping a month to test that my symptom relief wasn't psychosomatic and noticing that familiar irritation coming back as a warning that it was probably not a placebo. I then was overcome with sadness because I could not remember what specific forum and comment introduced kefir to me. Now I accept that I must give thanks in a different way, by sharing this wonderful food with as many people as possible.
I have been able to help many close friends end their vaginal infections and other skin issues using milk kefir. Few things make me happier than hearing that another vulva is again happy and healthy thanks to my kefir! Now, I hope to share my love for kefir with millions more.
